BOSTON, MA- Edward M. Kennedy, joined by Congressman Bill Delahunt and Governor Mitt Romney, today joined in the signing of an agreement among the United States Coast Guard, the National Guard Bureau and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to preserve the Coast Guard’s role at Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod. The signing created the Massachusetts Military Reservation Installation Partnership that will enable the Coast Guard to continue its critical national security functions out of Otis and serve as a foundation for the future of the base. Tom Lopach | Permalink Kennedy Responds to Admiral Keating's Statement that the Northeast Is Protected Without OtisThu Aug 11, 09:59 AM
Today, Senator Edward M. Kennedy sent the following letter to Admiral Timothy Keating in response to the Admiral’s comments yesterday at the BRAC Commission hearing. Admiral Keating stated that he felt security in the Northeast would not be hampered by closing Otis. Yesterday, in response to the hearing, Senator Kennedy said, “The Commissioners obviously understand our concerns about the BRAC recommendations on Otis. Chairman Principi in particular highlighted the consequences of closing Otis, and the risks to our national security. It’s disappointing that Admiral Keating felt it necessary to categorically defend the Pentagon recommendations, and that Homeland Secretary Chertoff did not even testify before the Commission to discuss the Coast Guard’s very real concerns about closing Otis. Nothing in today’s testimony undercuts the very strong case for keeping Otis open as an indispensable part of our security in the entire northeast.” Crystal Patterson | Permalink Kennedy Calls on Santorum to ApologizeTue Jul 12, 10:26 AM
Senator Kennedy made the following statement on the floor of the Senate today: “Rick Santorum owes an immediate apology to the tragic, long-suffering victims of sexual abuse and their families in Boston, in Massachusetts, in Pennsylvania and around this country. His outrageous and offensive comments – which he had the indecency to repeat yesterday – blamed the people of Boston for the depraved behavior of sick individuals who stole the innocence of children in the most horrible way imaginable. Senator Santorum has shown a deep and callous insensitivity to the victims and their suffering in an apparent attempt to score political points with some of the most extreme members of the fringe right wing of his Party. Boston bashing might be in vogue with some Republicans, but Rick Santorum’s statements are beyond the pale. Three years ago, Senator Santorum said “While it is no excuse for this scandal, it is no surprise that Boston, a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America, lies at the center of the storm.” When given an opportunity to apologize yesterday, he refused and instead restated these outrageous statements. The people of Boston are to blame for the clergy sexual abuse? That statement is irresponsible, insensitive and inexcusable. Rick Santorum should join all Americans in celebrating the accomplishments of the people of Boston. ” Crystal Patterson | Permalink Senator Kennedy's Ongoing Commitment to ServiceSun Jul 3, 09:23 AM
From time to time, we will be highlighting some of the groups and organizations that senator Kennedy works with in Massachusetts and around the country. One of those groups is the Massachusetts Service Alliance. Earlier this year, the Senator joined the Alliance in celebrating the 10th anniversary of AmeriCorps and promoting community service efforts across Massachusetts. After the ceremony, the Senator read “If You Give a Moose a Muffin”, on of the students’ favorite books to them. ![]() Senator Kennedy with the preschool students at the Esuelita Boriken/ Jorge Hernandez Cultural Center ![]() Senator Kennedy Reading to preschool students at the Escuelita Boriken/ Jorge Hernandez Cultural Center.
